give me a break

A man is married to 13 wives and all of them are pregnant at the same time and at the same month.

When it comes to food, I try to stick to my “don’t knock it until you try it” philosophy…but when it comes to Chinese “virgin eggs,” I think I’ll make an exception. Here’s why.

These eggs are boiled in the urine of young boys. In one Chinese city, this dish is considered a delicacy.

For hundreds of years, the people of Dongyang have enjoyed their favorite springtime snack, tong zi dan…which roughly translates to “boy egg.”

The cooking process involves boiling the eggs in urine, cracking them, and then placing them back into the urine pot to absorb as much flavor as possible.

How do they collect the pee? Glad you asked! Buckets are set outside of elementary school classrooms and boys are encouraged to discharge into them between classes. The buckets are then collected by local restaurants.

The locals claim that tong zi dan is beneficial to one’s health, but doctors aren’t so sure. There’s a reason why our bodies get rid of urine, after all.

Sylvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani have agreed to enter into a polyandry marriage contract with Joyce Wambui. Polyandry is a form of polygamy whereby a woman takes two or more husbands at the same time.

Wambui who is in her late twenties, is a widow and mother to twins. She had affairs with both men for four years. When the two men found out, the woman refused to leave either of them, leading to a contractual agreement between the three.

Abdhallah Abdulrahman, a local police officer attempted to make peace between the trio.

“I heard people fighting and went to check, but I was surprised to see two men fighting over a woman who is said to be a widow and a mother of twins. We discussed everything, and they agreed that even if the woman were to fall pregnant they will raise the child as their own since they have been taking care of the woman’s children together.”

Kenya’s NTV station published an excerpt of the contract. It states: “We have agreed that from today we will not threaten or have jealous feelings because of our wife, who says she’s not ready to let go of any of us. Each one will respect the day set aside for him. We agree to love each other and live peacefully. No one has forced us to make this agreement.”

Mdendwa told BBC the agreement was a logical conclusion as he and Kimani had been at odds over Wambui.

“It could have been very dangerous if the other man would have come to her house and caught me,” he said. “So our agreement is good as it sets boundaries and helps us keep peace. She is like the central referee. She can say whether she wants me or my colleague.”

ORLANDO, Florida – A 22-year-old man suspected of burglarizing homes in Florida was killed and partially eaten by an 11-foot (3.4 meters) alligator after he waded into a lake, apparently to avoid detection by law enforcement officers pursuing him, police said on Tuesday.

An autopsy on the man, Matthew Riggins of Palm Bay, determined that he drowned in November after an apparent alligator attack. A necropsy on the alligator revealed parts of the man’s body in the reptile’s stomach, according to a report released this week by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies chased Riggins and another suspect with dogs and a helicopter on Nov. 13 after residents in the Barefoot Bay community reported two men walking behind houses, authorities said.

No suspects were caught that night. Riggins was reported missing by his family when he did not return home, according to the sheriff’s report. His body was found 10 days later floating in a lake, with an aggressive gator standing guard, sheriff’s Major Tod Goodyear said.

“I believe he was hiding,” Goodyear said of how Riggins ended up in the lake. “With the dogs out there, it’s not a bad idea to go into the water.”

Goodyear said Riggins had told his girlfriend by telephone that he would be burglarizing homes the evening of Nov. 13 and later told her he was being chased by deputies. Reuters

Curious diners at a seafood restaurant in Hangzhou were recently spotted crowding around to watch as a young woman hand-fed crab to a salivating gentleman. As it turns out, he bought her “crab-peeling services” on the internet for 260RMB.

The woman reportedly offers her services on Taobao and charges 10RMB to peel each crab with an extra 5RMB if you want to be fed. This particular diner ordered 20 crabs in total and got a little discount because he ordered the “King Meal”.

The hostess says she quit her previous job as a flight attendant on a domestic airline to pursue the freedoms of part-time work. Despite her hands turning red after peeling numerous crabs, she smiled all the way through it and seemed to appreciate the publicity.

Honestly, who could think of a better way to spend the equivalent of £26/40USD/$56AUD?

These men wanted her to feed them too, but she turned them down. It seems she is very devoted to her work.

A Chinese man divorced and then sued his ex-wife for giving birth to what he called an extremely ugly baby girl, the Irish Times reported.

Initially, Jian Feng accused his wife of infidelity, so sure that he could never father an unattractive child.

When a DNA test proved that the baby was his, Feng’s wife came clean on a little secret — before they met, she had undergone about $100,000 worth of cosmetic surgery in South Korea.

Feng sued his ex-wife on the grounds of false pretenses, for not telling him about the plastic surgery and duping him into thinking she was beautiful, The Huffington Post reported.

The kicker? He won. A judge agreed with Feng’s argument and ordered his ex-wife to fork over $120,000.

“I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues,” he told the Irish Times. “Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me.”

At the table, silence is golden, especially in noisy New York. That’s the gamble a young restaurant owner is taking with patrons, who are prohibited from talking during four-course meals.

The project, launched a month ago at Eat in Brooklyn’s fashionable Greenpoint neighborhood, has created a buzz in a city where restaurants are often so noisy that they trigger routine complaints.

Customers have to reserve days in advance for the privilege of eating without speaking or hearing a word on Friday or Saturday night in the small room that seats 25.

“I want to provide the opportunity for people to experience the food with a kind of intention and attention to the experience that isn’t usually afforded by a loud meal, especially in New York City,” manager Nicholas Nauman told AFP.

Customers who dare break the golden rule during the $40 prix fixe meal are forced to finish their plate on a bench outside.

Sitting at long, wooden tables adorned with stoneware, the clients play along while tasting a menu based on local organic ingredients.

For an entire hour, they savor the food, watch one another and don’t say a word, as though cut off from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

Cell phones must also be turned off. Some struggle to keep serious in the face of an experience that is the polar opposite of the constant frenzy prevalent in New York, the city that never sleeps.

Accolades from all around

“We’re bringing our own intentionality to it as well,” explained the restaurant’s chef Elsa Schmitt, using a philosophical term for the mind’s power to stand in for things or concepts.

“We know what is about to take place so we’re bringing our own energies to it.”

As the dinner ends, after dessert, the silence ends.

Nauman, 28, breaks the silence first with a “thank you guys,” and is greeted by applause from his customers.

“It was very enjoyable,” said chemist Kevin Stokely.

Morgan Yakus, who like most clients was in her 30s, spoke of the almost transcendental experience as an “internal dialogue of your mind, saying all kids of things.”

“I wanted to laugh. You’re going through stages but by the end, you’re in a really zen, relaxed stage,” she said.

Alison Wise came with her boyfriend, and the couple was won over as well, though for different reasons.

“It was a really nice way to spend time together without any of the pressure of coming up with anything to say,” she said.

At first, Nauman had hoped to organize one silent meal per month. But his haven of silence in a hub of sound was so popular that it quickly became a weekly affair.
